An implicit bias, or implicit stereotype, is the unconscious attribution of particular qualities to a member of a certain social group. Implicit stereotypes are influenced by experience, and are based on LEARNED associations between various qualities and social categories, including race or gender.
I speak to my kids about this a lot and at times they look at me like I’m nuts.
But…..the ability to identify your bias helps to keep you intellectually honest about things.
Unfortunately, identifying and exposing an implicit bias within others is not a task to take lightly as people aren’t entirely open to that type of constructive criticism.
My advice is to lead by example and speak to your truths as you discover your own bias and make the paradigm shift.
